It’s safe, time tested, and provides long-lasting results.
What Is PRP?
First, it is important to understand what platelets and plasma are. Your blood is composed of a liquid called plasma that contains blood cells. The blood cells that transport growth factors and nutrients throughout your body are called platelets. Platelets, also known as thrombocytes, stimulate healing.
In Platelet Rich Plasma treatments, the patient’s own blood is used to create a serum that has high concentrations of restorative blood platelets. The PRP serum contains from three to five times the concentration of thrombocytes than occur naturally. The process starts with taking the patient’s blood and putting it into a centrifuge to create the platelet-rich serum.
How Can PRP Help?
PRP is not a newly discovered trial procedure. It has been used by cosmetic and reconstructive surgeons to encourage skin rejuvenation since the 1970s. It is also routinely used in clinical dermatology. So how does the staff at Elite Styles Salon & Med Spa use that same technology to help our patients in Miami?
Over time, the skin loses elasticity due to a decrease in collagen production that can be caused by natural aging, personal habits, and UV exposure. Lax skin creates drooping, wrinkles, and jowls that are equated with aging. This healing elixir, when used by trained medical aestheticians, is then used to stimulate collagen and elastin production, increasing the fullness and tightness of younger skin.
Some of the first signs of UV damage shows up in the delicate skin around the eyes. PRP is an ideal therapy to address skin laxity around the eyes where other therapies like lasers are not safe to use. Platelet-rich plasma treatments thicken the skin, effectively smoothing away wrinkles and lines, and turning back the hands of time. Increased collagen production can also help with the effects of rosacea, as it improves the tone of the skin.
Since the serum is produced in the patient’s body, there is little chance of adverse reaction as there would be from foreign substances. Platelet Rich Plasma treatments take around three to four weeks to be apparent, and they last for up to 18 months after completing treatment. In a study published in the Annals of Dermatology, researchers determined that PRP promotes “the remodeling of aged and photoaged skin.”
What Can I Expect?
The procedure is like a relaxing facial. First, your face will be thoroughly cleaned and dried, and a numbing agent will be applied to counteract any slight discomfort. Then a micro-needling tool will create tiny pinpricks to stimulate the body’s healing response. Finally, the PRP will be applied to the skin to be absorbed deeply, encouraging collagen and relating regeneration.
Your treatment will take about 15-20 minutes from the time the micro-needling begins. You’ll be asked to refrain from using cosmetics for 48 hours. After three days of avoiding direct sunlight, your new complexion will start to emerge.
