Botox was the original use of botulinum toxin type A approved by the FDA for cosmetic use to treat aging signs. While the product and technique were initially designed for paralyzing the facial muscles to relax wrinkles, over the years, it has become the leading aesthetic treatment for many other uses like crow’s feet, forehead creases, frown lines, and brow lifts. Other therapies that utilize Botox’s effects are combating cleavage wrinkling, underarm sweating, and smoker’s lines around the lips. The results take seven to ten days and last up to six months.
Dysport is one of the newer alternatives on the market. It is a popular choice when patients have quit responding to Botox. Two of the characteristics that set Dysport apart from Botox are that it is administered in a different dosage and spreads more than Botox, so it is appropriate for larger areas. Results can be seen in two to three days and last up to six months.
Another alternative to Botox, Xeomin does not contain the proteins that are added to Botox or Dysport that can cause the body to build up resistance over time. There is also less chance of allergic reactions due to the absence of the accessory protein. It typically takes five to six days to see results, and they last up to six months.
Juvederm Ultra is hyaluronic acid or HA filler approved by the FDA in 2010. It is popular for use in plumping the lips and minimizing the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Results are visible immediately and can last up to a year.
Restylane is another HA filler that has been on the market for over 20 years. It has been very successful in adding fullness to minimize the looks of deeper, more severe lines like nasolabial folds and marionette lines. Results are visible immediately and have been reported to last for up to 18 months.
Belotero Balance is also an HA filler. Where Restylane is more effective for deep lines, Belotero is used to treat moderate to fine lines. It is excellent for smile lines and vertical lines around the lips. Results can be seen immediately and last up to six months, depending on the area treated.
Radiesse is an FDA approved filler made from a naturally occurring substance in our bodies called calcium hydroxyapatite. It can stimulate the production of collagen, the building block of skin, and connective tissues. It is slightly thicker than hyaluronic acid fillers and is used for deep lines and wrinkles. Results are immediately apparent and can last up to 12 months.
